On October 1, the final day of competition at the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be celebrated with a Row for the Cure event at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.

With the support of USRowing, Row for the Cure is the rowing and water-sports community’s crusade against breast cancer, raising $2.2 million to benefit Susan G. Komen, the largest breast cancer organization in the United States.

“About 12% of women living in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives” said Meredith Scerba, the executive director of the 2017 World Rowing Championships. “These are incredible individuals with incredible stories, and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to assist in the fight against the terrible disease.”

On the afternoon of October 1, residents and visitors are invited to climb aboard kayaks, dragon boats, and 8-person rowing shells at Nathan Benderson Park. All money generated from sales will be donated to the Florida Suncoast Chapter of Susan G. Komen.

“This is a chance of a lifetime for us to be a part of the 2017 World Rowing Championships,” said Kathy Frederick, the founder of Row for the Cure. “Many of those who participate in Row for the Cure are breast cancer survivors. They are going to be thrilled to share the water with their supporters.”

Entry fees are:

  • $70 for an individual
  • $1,000 for an 8-person rowing shell
  • $1,300 for a Dragon Boat Team (20 people)
